Nerve conduction studies and electromyography provide clinical information about aspects of nerve and muscle function. Your referring clinician interprets results in context.
Two complementary parts
NCS and EMG answer different clinical questions.
A nerve conduction study records how selected nerves respond to controlled electrical stimulation. Needle electromyography may assess electrical activity in selected muscles. The exact study depends on the referral question and clinical findings.
The test can be uncomfortable for some people. Tell the clinician about medical devices, blood-thinning medicines, bleeding concerns, skin problems or anything else relevant before the study.

Wear
Choose comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being examined.
Avoid
Unless instructed otherwise, avoid applying creams or oils to the test area on the day.
Bring
Your referral, relevant reports, medicines list and identification requested by the hospital.

The study is tailored to the referral.
