EMG/NCS answers a focused nerve-and-muscle question
Electrodiagnostic testing may help localise nerve compression, distinguish a nerve-root problem from a peripheral nerve lesion, characterise selected neuropathies and evaluate aspects of muscle function. It does not diagnose every cause of pain, dizziness, headache or small-fibre symptoms.
The test should be interpreted with the history and examination. Booking only “an EMG” without a clinical question can lead to an unhelpful result.
